2015 The Direction…

The Antioch Movement is a sending community seeking those far from God. We are launching a movement that is replicable and sustainable. We are trusting God for a few big things this year. The first is to see two to three new missional communities launched. At the end of 2014 we had two launched. A missional community is a gathering of 20 to 70 folks. These can happen in neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, wherever a follower of Jesus is and carries with them the character and competency of Jesus. The second thing we are trusting God for is to see rapid reproduction in the context ofRead More →

The Father Wants You To Ask

Prayer is a marvelous thing. It is deeply challenging and many of us find it difficult to do. In Luke 11:1-13 Jesus gives us a little insight into what he thinks about prayer. Take just a moment and read what he has to say, Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them,“When you pray, say:   “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselvesRead More →

Not That Guy!

One of my favorite people in the world is a guy named Zak. You wouldn’t necessarily think that Zak and I would be bros. I’m relatively straight laced and clean cut. Zak is all punk. From the skinny jeans and lip rings to the “half cut” (don’t ask), Zak is the embodiment of punk. Over the course of our friendship Zak has become an ardent follower of Jesus. In so many ways he is the kind of man that I want my son to be (definitely not the skinny jeans). He cares deeply for people and wants others to love Jesus. During his time inRead More →

Perspective Shift

The Antioch Movement is all about multiplication and discipleship. It’s who we are. Our identity as a people is wrapped up those two things. If we are not about discipleship and multiplication then we may as well fold up and go home. Those four sentences are easy to write, easy to say, but really hard to live. For us to become a people who lives this out we need a perspective shift. Shift 1 Luke 10:16 – “The on who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” – Jesus Did youRead More →

Doubt on Tap – It’s Not About The Beer

Recently there have been many posts around the internet talking about beer and faith. They’ve talked about how churches are using the tavern to bring the gospel to people far from God. It’s been interesting to see the push back from folks in the church world over some of these things. I was first introduced to the idea by a good friend Bryan Berghoef. Bryan is a pastor in Washington DC, but at the time he was in Traverse City, MI and was doing something called Pub Theology. It was a group of people gathering in a pub and discussing the things that mattered most.Read More →

Sticks and Stones…

Growing up I was pretty chubby. Actually, I’m still pretty chubby. Middle School and the beginning of high school was pretty brutal for a chubby kid. I got teased. Today we would call it “bullying” but, it really was kids being kids. I was overweight, didn’t have many friends, and so I was teased. It’s life. You get over it. You learn how to handle the words and when you find someone who speaks words of life, you embrace them. One of the phrases that people would offer as a means to help was, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will neverRead More →

The Response to The Moment

Kairos, that moment when time is broken into by God, calls us to respond. Too often we rush past it and ignore the moment. We have too much going on and we don’t experience it in its fullness. When we do this we miss out on responding. At the end of Luke 1 we see Mary, Elizabeth, and Zechariah responding to the moment. Mary sings. Elizabeth is steadfast.  Zechariah speaks prophecy. All three respond to the moment because they entered into their kairos moment and didn’t let it slip by. Mary sings a song constructed from the Psalms in response to her moment. She was aRead More →

Imitation Is More Than Just Flattery

When you’re looking to launch a movement that is focused on something more than its own growth but looking to send laborers who will multiply their lives for the kingdom you become enthralled by Paul of Tarsus and Jesus. These two guys were all about multiplication. One of the things I am more and more thankful of are Paul’s letters. I like them because they give us glimpses into Paul’s thoughts and heart. For a very long time I have loved the letter to the Philippians. I think I’m drawn to it because of its tone of love and kindness. Paul isn’t dealing with anyRead More →

Rest or The Ferris Hypothesis

One of the hardest things to do is rest. We live in a world where many work seven days a week and wish there were eight. Our down times are filled with events and things to do. We go place and run all over town. It is very rare that we just stop and rest. I am not a very good “rester”. I struggle to stop. I have a hard time just turning everything off and entering a state of restfulness. This past Monday I chose to rest. I made a conscious decision to not work. I would not write emails, blog, call people, raiseRead More →
