One of my favorite people in the world is a guy named Zak. You wouldn’t necessarily think that Zak and I would be bros. I’m relatively straight laced and clean cut. Zak is all punk. From the skinny jeans and lip rings to the “half cut” (don’t ask), Zak is the embodiment of punk. Over the course of our friendship Zak has become an ardent follower of Jesus. In so many ways he is the kind of man that I want my son to be (definitely not the skinny jeans). He cares deeply for people and wants others to love Jesus. During his time inRead More →

As we read through Luke together on Sunday nights I am more convinced than ever that Jesus is one of coolest cats ever. He’s one of these guys that leave you thinking, “Really!?” We read this narrative Sunday night, After this he went out and saw a man named Levi at his work collecting taxes. Jesus said, “Come along with me.” And he did—walked away from everything and went with him. Levi gave a large dinner at his home for Jesus. Everybody was there, tax men and other disreputable characters as guests at the dinner. The Pharisees and their religion scholars came to his disciplesRead More →

But there was something about going to church that always seemed a little overwhelming. I think a part of it was because I have been a leader in the church for a really long time. You see often when you’re a leader there is a level of expectation that comes with showing your face at church. You are supposed to have it allRead More →

Seeing | Experiencing God

Do we simply wander through life from day to day, moment to moment without seeing those around us? When God places people in front of us, do we see His creation or do we see an obstacle? Do we see opportunity? At our last gathering, I witnessed my son’s heart on display. Like his old man, my son wears his heart on his sleeve. Better than his father, my son takes action on his heart without much thought about the consequences to himself. I fiercely love my sons. It is because of moments like the one I am about to relate that I am convincedRead More →

“I don’t know how.” Four words that keep most people from doing, well, anything. The fear of the unknown, a sense of unpreparedness, drives us to a place of safety. We decide to not even try. This is especially true when it comes to talking with people we know who are far from God. We are pretty sure we won’t be able to answer their questions.  We have doubts.  We don’t know what to say. What if they get mad? What if they don’t really want to talk about God? So we hide. We run for cover. This is the case and we all feelRead More →
